The Island Thames Ditton
Stairs and ground floor under construction. The project took nearly a year and involved demolition of most of the existing house. All materials and plant had to be ferried by barge across the Thames. Works were halted twice during the contract due to the river flooding!

The house was timber built on to horizontal and vertical steels sunk into 1m x 1M padstones and onto original brick pillars which ensured the floor was at least 2m above ground to offset the rise of flood waters. Nevertheless, on one occasion in 2000 the water came within inches of entering the living room.

Rear view of the house from the river. The top floor and balcony were all new construction. Windows were pre-manufactured through Travis Perkins.

Further internal view of the house – you can see the river Thames through the French doors.
